There is an intriguing
pattern in the scriptures, that may turn a few things upside down.
I’ll starting with
Jacob. His mom, Rebekah, grasped something of Abraham’s legacy. She also knew
it was not to be entrusted to Esau.
Jacob was deemed to be
Isaac’s second-born, by a technicality. But in sticking out his hand, Esau really
stole the birthright from Jacob, who arrived first.
The only true witness was
Rebekah. When the time was right, she conspired with Jacob to put it right and
ensure that Jacob inherited the blessing.
The point is that
Rebekah was not fatalistic about it. She changed the course of destiny and
instilled the same courage in her son.
Much of what happens
to us is excused as “God’s will”. Hiding behind God’s supposed leading can be
as misguided.
We need to know who we
are, just as Jacob had to decide he was the rightful heir, no matter what his
father had otherwise decided.
