Years ago I saw a drama in mime, in which Jesus was "nailed" to a man who assumed the configuration of a cross. On the other side of the stage, His father assumed the same position, alone - but as His son winced and reacted to every jolt, so did He.
David said, "I set the Lord at my right hand", which sounds wrong. A right hand man is a deputy, a 2IC. Yet in life, God, like any Father, expects us to take to our field of play or battle and to be in that moment, to live it, to write in our name, to be the makers of history or to be "Paul, an Apostle" or "Peter, a fisherman" or "David, the King".
Yet as we play the game of life, the Father, knowing He cannot take to the same field or play in the same scrum, ruck or maul, relives every agony and ecstasy, every moment of our lives, from the sidelines - and He is our biggest fan, by far. I know what that means - I am a Dad who loves His sons, but I too have had to let go and push them out of the nest while I pray for them.
