Breakthrough series 13: My cup runs over

In its ascent, a plane shakes and shudders as it claws at the air, then steadies into its noble assault on the sky.

In our spiritual wanderings we rise and fall, through shaky tenuousness, until we take up the slack to soar in our own element.

That describes rest rightly. Shalom, the Hebrew word for rest, does not imply idle rest, but a rest from angst: which only Jesus can give us.

Thus, when Israel gained Canaan, a rabble of slaves came of age, gained a true identity and rose to nationhood.

That reflects the awkward growth phases that transform our concept of God, in our own search for spiritual identity.

Like a leaky cup, David rose up with good intentions and fell back in despair: until God restored his soul. Then his cup ran over.

Our journeys close the gap between us and the un-moving beacon beyond: the objective of Jesus and the greatest of all fathers.

But once we get there, breach the veil and "crown our years" (Ps 103), we will build our best years on the ground thus gained.
